Job Smeets
Moss says the Dutch designer Job Smeets is “really exploring something current by taking industrially produced iconic objects—milk stools, kitchen pots, lanterns— and re-rendering them through the artistic process. He’ll do a life study of one of these quotidian objects,” explains Moss, “model it in wax, do another life study on a larger, more heroic scale, cast it in wax, then in bronze, polish it, and put it on an elaborate wood pedestal—as if to say, ‘Now that we went through an art process, can you see sculptural qualities inherent in everyday objects?’ He magnifies what it took to make these pieces and in doing so shows you exactly what is going on.”
