Daniel Rich, "Downburst," at Perry Rubenstein, 527 West 23rd St, December 11, 2008 – January 17, 2009
The images in Daniel Rich’s paintings are drawn from the news media, then transformed through a laborious system of scaling up and masking down. The results are curiously expressionless, but also highly politicized: From his use of source material from the "democratizing" Internet to his frequent choice of structures or monuments that have subsequently been destroyed or altered during the course of the Iraq War, to his deliberately mechanical painting technique, and even to his assertion that his works don’t make a political statement, Rich is one of the most provocative artists on show in New York this month.
