Vik Muniz on Creating a Rebus

Joseph Beuys, “Filzanzug (Felt Suit)” (1970)

“I was trained as a commercial artist, but when I started seeing the work of people like Joseph Beuys and Robert Morris, and what was being done in Europe with Arte Povera, I started to realize that advertising was the wrong place for me. I was trying to explore a relationship between ideas and material, and the classic example of Minimalism shows how those two things — the concept and form — connect in this purely poetic way, so that an artwork seems the perfect circumstance for those things to exist together.”
