Vik Muniz on Creating a Rebus

Tom Friedman, “Untitled” (1995)

“My work is consistently paired with certain people from my generation, and Tom is one of them. We both have a kind of conceptual practice that doesn’t take out labor and craft, or illusion and gimmicks. This piece’s pedestal repeats the form from the prior work in “Rebus” [Paul Outerbridge’s “Untitled” (1922)], but it also has that fly. You can’t help but wonder what that fly is.”
