At Stuart Shave/Modern Art's booth: Lothar Hempel, "Encounter in the Night" (2007)
Hempel’s eclectic contraption comprised of found objects, including an Indonesian puppet, Plexiglas, and a large photograph/montage of a cat-headed woman in a long dress riding a bicycle in the evening darkness, was so alluring I just had to “get” it. Call it a conversation piece, or someone’s Surrealist nightmare. The price, however, remained a mystery, since the dealer sensed I was a journalist and declined to reveal it.
