Amedeo Modigliani
"Portrait du sculpteur Oscar Miestchaninoff" (1916)
$30,841,000
Est. $18–25 million
After Matisse, Modigliani was surely the evening’s biggest star. This portrait, which sold for just under $10 million at Christie’s in New York in 1995, went to an anonymous bidder for more than three times that amount, barely missing the artist’s record of $31,368,000.
Another Modigliani, “Jeune fille assise en chemise” (1918), was the evening’s sixth top lot, selling for $16,841,000, also well above its estimate.
