A Disappointing Evening at Sotheby's

Pablo Picasso
"Tête de Femme (Dora Maar)" (conceived in 1941; cast in the 1950s)
$29,161,000
Est. $20–30 million

The highest price for a Picasso sculpture has stood for the past five years at $6.7 million, achieved for "La guenon et son petit" (1951), at Christie’s New York. This massive bronze bust of Picasso’s mistress trounced that record, but, in keeping with the tone of the evening, it did so rather sleepily, without much fanfare or even applause. New York dealers Philippe Ségalot and Franck Giraud beat out Paris gallerist Daniel Malingue to win the sculpture on behalf of an American client.
