Lyonel Feininger
"The Green Bridge" (1909)
$10,121,000
est. $12.5–15 million
This striking canvas—which reportedly inspired Matisse to rework one of his own compositions—was purchased by the same unidentified European collector who purchased the record-setting Marc. According to New York dealer Achim Moeller, the consignor had bought it at Christie’s London in 2001 for just $3.3 million, a fact he cited to offset fears about the market. “This doesn’t mark a turn,” said Moeller. “The market is too global right now.”
