Frank Stella, "Sharpeville Sketch" (1965), at Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco
$1.5 million
Exhibited only once before, in 1985, at the Albert and Vera List Visual Arts Center at M.I.T., this approximately 23-by-23-inch alkyd on canvas bears wall-grabbing might in delicate yet rigorous bands of brown, white, tan, and black.
The painting, with Leo Castelli provenance, sold at auction back in November 1990 at Sotheby’s New York for the bargain-basement-sounding price of $99,000.
