On the money: Ray Smith
A huge oil and pastel on panel at 144 by 192 inches, Smith’s quirky, Duchampian image of headless boxers duking it out in a choreographed blur manages to pull off the grand scale of its ambitions in a seemingly effortless manner. Although this exhibition at Roebling Hall is Smith’s first New York solo show in five years, he recently had a retrospective and other solos in Europe and Japan, and there’s no questioning his prolific production.
More of Smith’s “Rays Miths” are on display at Nicholas Robinson, and that’s a good idea, since this artist gobbles up space. Priced at $80,000, this work represents a realistic price, especially if you fall into the camp that believes that size matters.
