Martin Brothers Stoneware

The most sought after of the salt-glazed vessels by the four Martin brothers are the grotesque Wally Bird jars with removable heads. The birds were often caricatures of public figures. A large example with an especially long beak, shown at right, in Sotheby’s April 3 London sale carries an estimate of £60,000 to £80,000 ($117–156,000).
