Charlotte Perriand, "Sconce Collection" (1962), $5,000. On view at Sebastian+Barquet
A small run of Perriand’s striking wall sconces, fabricated in molded plastic and enameled steel and sporting a limited palette of red, yellow, gray, and black, were sold in Paris in the early 1960s by Galerie Steph Simon and retain a deliciously formal attitude.
Sold in pairs of two, they can be illuminated (as they were designed to be) or left unlit to resemble minimal paintings that look like miniature Blinky Palermos.
While there are more ambitious, larger-scale pieces in Sebastian+Barquet’s exhibition — which shows work by Perriand, Prouve, and Jeanneret (March 27-May 24) — these compact, sturdy sconces steal the show in terms of value.
