Siobhan Hapaska, "Indestructible" (2007) at Kerlin Gallery (Dublin), $6,000
Belfast-born Hapaska, who represented Ireland in the 2001 Venice Biennale, has an impressive and international exhibition history, including a recent solo show at the Camden Arts Centre in London.
This tabletop-scaled sculpture bristles with attitude and energy. It’s a formidable abstraction bearing a powerful organic form, but it is also laced with barbed-wire wit, containing a garland of artificial flowers that includes spent 9mm bullet cartridges sprouting wild berries.
The contrast of forms, made all the more glossy with two pack acrylic paint, seems a steal at $6,000, even though it’s from an edition of 10.
