On the Money
Sean Paul, “Untitled” (2006) at Sutton Lane (London),
$8,000
This 30-year-old artist graduated from Columbia University’s hot MFA program in 2005 and already has three solos under his belt, including one at Chelsea’s Elizabeth Dee in 2006, where this painting was first shown.
An homage or reprise of sorts of Roy Lichtenstein’s still lifes of common objects made in the early 1960’s, this deadpan Pop art appropriation of the Jasper Morrison pots and pans that were sold through the Museum of Modern Art’s Design Stores is both subtle and sophisticated.
Even with its Plain Jane application and limited palette, the composition is all about brand and status, alluding to Morrison’s huge footprint as a world-class designer, churning out unlimited editions for the masses.
