Richard Serra exhibition announcement, 1989
For Serra, 1989 was a big year, marking the removal of his site-specific "Tilted Arc" (1981) from 26 Federal Plaza, in Manhattan, after eight years of legal wrangling. The attention raised his profile as a large-scale sculptor, whose experiments with industrial materials (such as steel and molten lead) had been long sponsored by his dealer, Castelli. Several months later, three galleries—Castelli, Pace
and Jack Tilton—opened simultaneous Serra shows, including “8 Drawings.”
