EDINBURGH—Not to be outdone by
England, Scotland has conducted a poll to determine its favorite
painting and has published the top ten with the final choice to be
announced in a week.
Scotland's poll was organized by the
Herald and England's was conducted by the
BBC.
First on the Scottish list is Salvador Dali's
Christ of St. John of the Cross, owned by Glasgow Museums. According to the
Herald, the work leads the voting by a wide margin.
The following nine paintings fill out the top ten on the list:
- Flood Tide, Joan Eardley
- Windows in the West, Avril Paton
- Lady Taking Tea, Jean-Simeon Chardin
- Orange Blind, FCB Cadell
- Portrait of Rev Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch, Sir Henry Raeburn
- Man in Armour, Rembrandt
- Lady Agnew of Locknaw, John Singer Sargent
- Tay Bridge, James McIntosh Patrick
- Lady in Fur Wrap, El Greco
James Holloway, director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, is
disappointed that his own choice, the portrait of Robert Burns by
Alexander Naysmith, had not made the top 10. "I like all the paintings
in there, apart from one or two I do not know such as the Paton,"
writes the
Herald, "I love that El Greco work — although to this day no one is entirely sure whether it is by him."
