The High Museum of Art Commissions Major Work by Ellsworth Kelly

Published: October 25, 2005
ATLANTA—The High Museum of Art has commissioned a major work of art by renowned painter and sculptor Ellsworth Kelly as part of the debut of its recently completed expansion, scheduled to open Nov. 12.

Composed of three joined aluminum panels, Kelly's Blue, Green, Red—a 5-by-19-foot wall sculpture—will be installed in "one of the most high-profile public spaces in its expansion," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The space, known as The Wieland Lobby, is a major new entrance to the High complex of three gallery buildings and sits immediately behind the original Richard Meier landmark museum building.

Kelly, 82, is among a select group of artists whom the museum is collecting in depth, according to the AJC. One of the galleries in the Wieland Pavilion Skyway Level is devoted to four of his eccentrically shaped, large-scale monochrome canvases. With the new sculpture, the High museum will have a total of 11 Kelly works in its collection.
