New Zealander to Head Troubled Scottish Opera
Published:
General director of the New Zealand Opera, and an eight-year veteran of Edinburghs Fringe Festival, Alex Reedijk will take on directorship at the Scottish Opera next March. Recent job cuts to pay off the companys debts have caused the Scottish Opera to terminate full-scale performances until next May, continues the Scotsman, but Mr. Reedijk is optimistic about putting the Opera back on its feet. It's not a damaged company, he says. It's a company that has to have a cup of tea, to lie down and think about its future. Reedijk has had a professional relationship with the Scottish Opera in the past as a production manager who brought painter Peter Howson's designs to the stage for Don Giovanni and on the premiere of James MacMillan's Inez de Castro. According to Cornwell, Reedijk believes the companys £7.5 million in annual funding is secure for now. Reedijk also says he is accustomed to existing within a companys own means, as has been the case with the New Zealand Opera which has a much tighter funding situation.
