Broad Foundation Buys Beuys Collection

The "multiples,” a series of three-dimentional objects made in editions from unconventional materials such as felt, reels of film and fish bones, are considered some of the most important and essential of the German artist's works. The collection was purchased from Berlin-based collector Reinhard Schlegel for an undisclosed price. The multiples will be a unique holding for a West Coast institution, according to foundation director and chief curator Joanne Heyler. Some of the largest collections of Beuys' multiples are held in the Harvard University Art Museums, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Kunstmuseum in Bonn. A sampling of the works are to go on view at the inaugural exhibition of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum, a $50-million addition to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, scheduled to open in 2007. |
