Asia Week: Hit or Miss for Chinese Furniture Dealers

NEW YORK - Overall, Asia Week had all the bustle and frenzied buying of a Shanghai market at lunchtime, but Wendy Moonan reports today in The New York Times that the week ended with mixed results for Chinese furniture dealers.

While two dealers featuring Ming and Qing dynasty pieces Michael C. Hughes and Marcus Flacks told Moonan that they had sold better than expected, other dealers, such as Nicholas Grindley, felt the fervor of this year's New York show had passed by their furniture offerings.

"This is the dilemma of the furniture dealer: you can always sell a brush pot or a ceramic; in fact, I sold three-quarters of my objects. Furniture is tougher," said Grindley, a London dealer.
