Show by Art Nouveau Master Opens in Prague

Published: April 20, 2005
PRAGUE - A new exhibition of 300 works by internationally-acclaimed Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, one of the founders of the Art Nouveau movement, opened in Prague Tuesday, organizers said.

The works, which include lithographs and posters, will be on show in a new gallery called At the White Unicorn, in Prague's Old Town Square.

As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame in December 1894 when he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the most prominent actresses of the day, Sarah Bernhardt.

Mucha died in 1939, aged 78.

The exhibition runs until the end of September.
