Phillips Collection Acquires Two Works by Klee

Published: July 11, 2006
WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Washington Post)—The Phillips Collection here will soon be taking possession of The Witch With the Comb and To the Right, To the Left, both paintings by Swiss painter Paul Klee, from two Washington collectors, the Washington Post reports.

"We were looking to expand our Klee holdings. These works have added a dimension we didn't have before," said Elizabeth Hutton Turner, senior curator at the Phillips. The current donations are the first Klee works the museum has gained since 1953.

To the Right, To the Left, a 1938 painting, was donated by Elizabeth Klee (no relation to the artist), a former board member of the National Symphony Orchestra and member of the Lansburgh retail family.

The Witch With the Comb, a 1922 lithograph currently belongs to author Carol Cutler and her husband, former International Herald Tribune editor B.J. Cutler.

"We live a 10-minute walk from the Phillips. We go there a lot, and we have been most impressed with the special shows: the Calder and Miro show was an important show," said Carol Cutler who is also donating a 1996 pastel on paper by Sean Scully to the museum.

The museum is currently showing a survey of 80 works from both private and public collections titled "Klee and America.” The exhibition will be on view until Sept. 10.
