SF Arts Space Puts Curators in the Spotlight

Published: August 10, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO— A four-part exhibition running at an experimental San Francisco arts space pulls curators out of the shadows and places them in the limelight, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The exhibition, titled "Four on One—Curators Create, Artist Curates," attempts to expose the roles of curators as creators by allowing four well-known San Francisco curators to present the work of a single artist in weeklong sessions.

"The show will have four different views, from different perspectives,” said Michael Zheng, a conceptual artist and the organizer of the exhibition.

And the conceptual focus of "Four on One" is appropriate for the venue, according to the Chronicle. The experimental space in Pacific Heights, called the Garage Biennial, has become known for spoofing the ubiquitous biennial theme by offering “biennials” on a monthly basis.

Terri Cohn from the Berkeley Museum, gallery owner Steven Wolf, Clark Buckner from Mission 17 and Joyce Grimm from the Mission's Triple Base Gallery will each take turns working with artist Stephanie Syjuco, who was chosen by the curators for her diverse body of work.

"If she wasn't so enthusiastic, this wouldn't work,” said Zheng. “Her art is … not exactly the focus of the show."
