Douglas Gordon Returns Home with Major Retrospective

Published: August 21, 2006
EDINBURGH (The Scotsman)—

Scottish-born, New York-based artist Douglas Gordon has announced plans for his first major solo exhibition in Scotland in more than a decade, reports The Scotsman.

The retrospective, opening simultaneously in November at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Botanic Gardens and Royal Mile, will incorporate the most significant film, photographic and textual works from Gordon’s career.

Works slated for display include 24-Hour Psycho, in which Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller is screened at two frames per second; his List of Names, which occupies a wall of the National Gallery of Modern Art; the “Blind Stars” series; and Zidane, a 21st Century Portrait, which the National Galleries of Scotland bought for £70,000 pounds last month.

While Gordon’s work has been featured in several joint exhibitions over the years and at an Edinburgh gallery in 2002, he describes this as his first solo effort in Scotland in 13 years.

And it may be his last, he added. “I don’t imagine once I’ve done this there will be much left to do,” Gordon said.
