My First Acquisitions: Two photographs: a Richard Prince and a black-and-white Nan Goldin of three transvestites that the Guggenheim also owns a print of. I bought them in 1997; they were both about $5,000. At first I didn’t love the Prince and went to bring it back to Barbara Gladstone. But she started describing the work and telling me how great it was, and, needless to say, I went home with it. The Prince is in my office and the Nan is next to my husband Darren’s side of the bed. I don’t think he knows they’re transvestites; I will not be the one to tell him. --------------------- My Most Recent Purchases: I bought a Ben Grasso painting from Sixtyseven Gallery and a “Blue Painting” by Adela Leibowitz. Both were in the $4,000-6,000 range. I saw the Grasso through the gallery window with the lights off. It was the highlight of the gallery show and was sold, but then the buyer couldn’t pay for it. So after the show was over this great piece was still available, and I bought it on the spot. It is yet to be hung. I spotted Adela's work at the Scope fair [in New York] and fell in love. I soon became fast friends with the artist and visited her studio where she was in the middle of painting several works for an upcoming show. She only uses three shades of blue and white in her palette. Very unique. I bought a work, and we decided to do a show together in spring ’07. She is a gem! --------------------- My Favorite Works: I have a Gregory Crewdson from the “Natural Wonders” series and an Anna Gaskell photograph. These are the two most valuable pieces in my collection; they were in the $12,000-15,000 range. I always wanted a Crewdson. This one is special and definitely an important piece from this series. It hangs over our bed. The Gaskell is also my baby. It’s in our dining room. I remember going to the warehouse to triple check that I loved it before I bought it. It took me three years to pay my dad back for it! These two works I would never part with! |
