Jopling Opens New White Cube in Londons West End

Jay Jopling is opening a new White Cube gallery in the West End, a $20 million move that could cement his role as “king” of the London art dealers and give rival Gagosian more competition in the UK capital, Bloomberg reports. The 12,500-square-foot building in Mason's Yard, resembling a little Whitney Museum, opens Sept. 29 with an exhibition and sale of works by Mexico’s Gabriel Orozco. Jopling bought the West End property in 2002, saying he expected to complete it in 2004. The gray rectangular building was constructed on a demolished electricity substation—the $20 million cost includes the demolition—and was crammed into a courtyard edged by Old Master dealers. The gallery has 5,000 square feet of exhibition space, plus viewing rooms and offices, mostly illuminated by natural light from narrow rows of windows. It was designed by MRJ Rundell & Associates and is the first freestanding structure to be put up in the area in 45 years, Jopling said.
