Chris Ofili Exhibition Opens Today in New York

Published: April 27, 2005
Today the Studio Museum in Harlem opens an exhibition of watercolors by Chris Ofili, who became known in the 1990s as one of the Young British Artists avidly collected by Charles Saatchi and whose work was in the exhibition Sensation: Young British Art at the Brooklyn Museum in 1999.

The New York Daily News takes the occasion of Ofili's first New York solo museum exhibition to remind readers that former mayor Rudolph Giuliani almost shut down the Brooklyn Museum over his reaction to Ofili's painting The Holy Virgin Mary, which featured sizable blobs of elephant dung. The 181 works in Chris Ofili: Afro Muses, 1995-2005 at the Studio Museum do not feature any elephant droppings, only paint on paper. Ofili tells Newsday, "I hope that people come and see the beauty of these and are uplifted."
