Afro Basaldella in Italy

Published: December 26, 2006
PORDENONE, Italy—The Municipal Museum and modern art gallery Villa Galvani are presenting the work of Afro Basaldella, as part of a year of exhibitions dedicated to the artist, through March 19.

An additional exhibition is on display in Udine, at St. Francis, a former church that is now a center for important exhibitions.

The exhibitions are dedicated to Basaldella and his relationship with Italian and American art. They are presented in collaboration with Italian and other museums, plus additional public and private collections.

In addition to Basaldella’s paintings, works by New York abstract expressionists who influenced Basaldella are on display, including Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Conrad Marca-Relli and Jackson Pollock. Other highlights include drawings by Arshile Gorky, who greatly interested Basaldella, although he died in 1948.

The exhibitions at Villa Galvani and the Municipal Museum trace Basaldella’s Italian career from the early 1930s and include painting and sculpture by other influential artists in Italy in the 20th century. Works by Renato Birolli, Alberto Burri, Ettore Colla, Pietro Antonio Novelli and Mimmo Rotella are on display.

The large quantity and the importance of many of the works—some of which are on display in Italy for the first time—make this a significant event in Italy.
