Klimts to Bring “Bling” to Liverpool

Published: November 9, 2006
LIVERPOOL (The Guardian)—The city of Liverpool, crowned the “European capital of culture” for 2008, has unveiled its lineup for that year. A Gustav Klimt exhibition is slated to be one of the highlights, The Guardian reports.

The exhibition will be the first in the U.K. devoted to the artist, and Tate Liverpool director Christoph Grunenberg said the works will bring the “bling” to the year-long celebration. “Liverpool is very bling and Klimt is very bling—these are very decorative, ornamental works.”

He added that the more than 100 works on display will include “major, major” paintings, erotic drawings, jewelry and architectural models.

Other exhibitions, featuring works by Turner, Monet, van Gogh and Hopper, are also planned, as well as a variety of other cultural events, such as the Berlin Philharmonic and a footballers’ wives fashion show.

“This is just the start,” said culture council leader Warren Bradley. “I hope there will be plenty more rabbits out of the hat.”
