Published: December 4, 2006
LONDON (BBC News)—

Painter Tomma Abts has won the £25,000 Turner Prize, BBC News reports.

The German-born artist was shortlisted along with poster artist Mark Titchner, sculptor Rebecca Warren and video artist Phil Collins. She was nominated for her “intimate and compelling canvases,” according to organizers.

Abts’ acrylic and oil paintings are consistently 48-by-38 centimeters and take shape through a “gradual process of layering and accrual.” The artist was nominated for her solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; and greengrassi, London.

Each of the other shortlisted artists took home £5,000.

Artist and musician Yoko Ono presented the prize today at Tate Britain.
