Frank Gehry to Design Weisman Addition
Published: March 9, 2007
Plans for the addition, slated to open in 2009, will be unveiled March 13. They call for adding 11,000 square feet to the existing 47,000-square-foot museum. Gehry said architects do not often get the opportunity to design additions to their earlier buildings. “The Weisman is special because it was the beginning of a new design direction for me,” he said, adding that the existing building, which he finished in 1993, always seemed incomplete because its back is a bland brick box, unlike its ornate riverside front. “The expansion means we can bring the architecture around the museum to the pedestrian bridge and Coffman Plaza, something I felt was lacking from the beginning.” Star Tribune: A twist in the tinfoil - Gehry doing Weisman addition |
