Frank Gehry to Design Weisman Addition

Published: March 9, 2007
MINNEAPOLIS—Superstar architect Frank Gehry will soon be revisiting his past, the Star Tribune reports. Gehry will design a $10 million addition to the University of Minnesota’s Weisman Art Museum—the first art museum he designed in the United States.

Plans for the addition, slated to open in 2009, will be unveiled March 13. They call for adding 11,000 square feet to the existing 47,000-square-foot museum.

Gehry said architects do not often get the opportunity to design additions to their earlier buildings.

“The Weisman is special because it was the beginning of a new design direction for me,” he said, adding that the existing building, which he finished in 1993, always seemed incomplete because its back is a bland brick box, unlike its ornate riverside front.

“The expansion means we can bring the architecture around the museum to the pedestrian bridge and Coffman Plaza, something I felt was lacking from the beginning.”
