Furniture Gets a Leg Up in Art World

Published: December 14, 2006
MIAMI (Los Angeles Times)—This year’s Design Miami helped furniture designers cement their status in the modern art world, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The two-year-old fair ran during Art Basel Miami Beach last week and included Marc Newson’s Lockheed Lounge chair, listed at $2.5 million; a couch silk-screened with newspapers by Mattia Bonetti; and a $60,000 crumpled aluminum sofa and love seat by Shlomo Harush.

It also attracted high-profile visitors such as performers Beyonce, Jay-Z and Kanye West, and actors Keanu Reeves and Mandy Moore.

“Furniture is no longer aesthetics’ stepchild,” said Amy Lau, a New York-based interior designer and one of the original organizers of the fair.

As proof of the growing reputation of design: In January, the renowned Gagosian Gallery will unveil Newson’s new marble chairs, tables and wall shelves.
