Konstantin Andreevich Somov, "The Rainbow" (1927)
LONDON—
Konstantin Somov’s painting
The Rainbow (1927) sold for $7.3 million at a
Christie’s sale in
London on June 13,
shattering a record for a work at an auction of Russian art,
Bloomberg reports.
Eighty-five percent of the buyers were from
Russia, according to Christie’s.
“When Russian collectors want something of top quality, money is meaningless
for them: They will pay crazy prices,” said
James Butterwick, a Russian art
dealer in
London.
“In my 20 years of dealing with Russian art, I've never seen such a fine
Somov.”
