Gap Founders Propose Contemporary Museum for San Francisco

Published: August 8, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO—Doris and Donald Fisher, founders of the Gap, have made an offer to fund the design and construction of a contemporary art museum in San Francisco’s Presidio park that would be home to their personal art collection, reports the L.A. Times. The collection of more than 1,000 works includes pieces by Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, and Andy Warhol.

The proposal, for a 100,000-square-foot museum called CAMP, for Contemporary Art Museum in the Presidio, will be evaluated by the park's trust, which hopes to receive other offers for the proposed site, according to Craig Middleton, executive director of the Presidio. "I think it's one of those things where we're going to be asking people to not only provide ideas that would complement this idea," said Middleton, "but, if they can, top it."
