L.A. MOCA Show to Include Vuitton Boutique
Published: August 9, 2007
LOS ANGELES— In a move sure to spark debate over the ethics of merging art and commerce in a museum setting, Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art has announced that it will open an onsite Louis Vuitton boutique in association with its Takashi Murakami retrospective this fall, reports the L.A. Times.
The label, which has a long relationship with Murakami, will offer handbags featuring the artist’s designs and ranging in price from $875 to $920 as well as other leather goods using Murakami’s motifs. Unlike a traditional museum shop, usually situated outside the exhibition area, the Vuitton shop will be located within the gallery space itself. "People have touched base with the play between the commercial arena and high art,” said MOCA chief curator Paul Schimmel, who organized the show, “but this is a little more confrontational." |
