In last week’s inaugural Top 5, we picked our favorite shows of the upcoming fall season. This week, we've decided to spotlight five art-world feuds, some of them real, others contrived (sometimes by us). Enjoy.
1. Idealism v. Cynicism
It’s the perennial debate in the art world, here translated into a battle between expedience and excess, as exemplified by two very different takes on the intersection of art and fashion: Hirst’s and Zittel’s. See if you can guess which is which.
2. Blog v. Blog
So what if they live at the same address—has shared space ever stood in the way of a good fight? This family feud pits MAN v. Grrl.
3. Man v. Himself (times two)
Make of these stories what you will:
Sell out or sell off?
Buy in or buy out?
4. The Public v. Public Art
Sometimes you just need a bench to sit on. Sometimes you just need a bench to piss on.
5. Chelsea v. You
One neighborhood, 360 galleries. Last Thursday, to mark the opening of the fall season, more than 70 openings; then a dozen on Friday; and 20 more on Saturday. And, oh yes, expect a couple dozen this week.
All of them vying for your attention. Lord help you!
