LONDON— Sotheby’s has doubled its estimate for an auction of Russian art from the collection of the late cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, to £20 million ($40.6 million), reports Bloomberg.
Sotheby’s said the number of works has doubled, and that higher-priced art has been included. The auction, scheduled to take place Sept. 18–19 in London, now includes 450 lots, with several estimated at $1 million or more and the top lot expected to fetch $4 million. Prominent works in the collection include Russian modernist paintings from the 1920s, 19th-century porcelain, glass, and paintings, and late 17th-century enamels. "This is the biggest and best collection of Russian art outside of Russia," said Mikhail Kamensky, director of Sotheby's Moscow office. "This is a great opportunity to acquire art from a unique collection put together by two world cultural figures." |
