The Venice Biennale, which opened in June and runs through November 27, has announced this year’s Golden Lion award recipients.

The Biennale’s award for lifetime achievement went to the Malian artist Malick Sidibe. Benjamin Buchloh was distinguished with the award for art criticism.

Hungary received the best national participation recognition for its area featuring Viennese artist Andreas Fogarasi. Lithuania got an honorable mention for its pavilion featuring Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas.

The Golden Lion for an artist under 40 went to Emily Jacir, a Jordan-born artist who works in New York and Ramallah,
for her work focusing on exile and the Palestinian issue and establishing and expanding a “crossover between cinema, archival documentation, narrative and sound.”

The Golden Lion for an artist participating in the central international exhibition was awarded to Buenos Aires-based Leon Ferrari for his “ethical attitude and political commitment” in an “often antagonistic political and social situation.” Honorable mention went to Bulgaria’s Nedko Solakov.
