Hockney to Present Robert Wilson with Rosa d’Oro

PALERMO, Italy—David Hockney will present the Rosa d’Oro Award to director and artist Robert Wilson in a ceremony at Palermo’s Palazzo dei Normanni on October 27.

Hockney, the current holder of the Rosa d’Oro (Golden Rose)—which was conceived by Jorge Luis Borges in 1984 and is sponsored by the Sicilian government—nominated Wilson for his influential, groundbreaking work that spans artistic disciplines, from theater, opera, performance, and dance to visual arts and design.

Italian critic and curator Achille Bonito Oliva will speak in Wilson’s honor.

Following the ceremony, an exhibit dedicated to Wilson’s life and work—including drawings from his production of Les Fables de la Fontaine and documents on loan from personal archives—will open at the palazzo.

Previous recipients of the Rosa d’Oro include Yves Saint Laurent (2001), Eduardo Chilida (1998), I.M. Pei (1996), Peter Stein (1994), Pierre Boulez (1992), Giulio Eiunaudi (1990), and Henri Cartier-Bresson (1986).

Wilson will return to New York in November for his production of Jo Kondo at the Guggenheim on On November 18 and 19.
