PALM SPRINGS, Calif.—A landmark modernist house is going under the hammer in May alongside paintings and sculptures,
the New York Times reports. The
Kaufmann House, built of stone and steel in 1946 on the edge of Palm Springs, Calif., by the architect Richard Neutra, has an estimate of $15 million to $25 million for the
Christie's sale of postwar and contemporary art in New York. The house is currently owned by Brent Harris, an investment manager, and Beth Edwards Harris, an architectural historian, who are finalizing their divorce.
"Auctions of such midcentury landmarks have become more common in recent years," according to the
Times. "Such auctions are bringing a new level of scrutiny to a form that, little more than a decade ago, attracted so little notice that the Kaufmann House was being offered for sale as a teardown."
