LYNCHBURG, Va.—A Virginia judge has temporarily halted the sale of four paintings from
Randolph College's
Maier Museum of Art until litigation against the school is settled,
reports the New York Times
via the AP. The injunction will take effect as soon as the opponents of
the sale post a $10 million bond. The ruling, by Judge
J. Leyburn Mosby
Jr. of the Lynchburg Circuit Court, was in response to motions filed by
a group seeking to stop the school to sell the works, which include
Men of the Docks
(1912) by George Bellows. The Lynchburg school argues it needs to sell
the works to shore up its endowment and hopes to have the decision
reversed before the first auction, on November 19.
