NEW YORK—A
Rufino Tamayo painting that was rescued from the trash in New York several years after being stolen from its owners in Texas sold for more that $1 million at
Sotheby’s auction of Latin American art Tuesday night, reports Reuters.
Elizabeth Gibson, who found
Tres Personajes, researched it, and eventually turned it over to Sotheby’s, is said to have received a $15,000 reward from the work’s undisclosed owner, as well as a portion of the hammer price of $1,049,000, well over the estimate of $750,000 to $1 million.
