NEW YORK—An upcoming charity auction at
Sotheby's has a star-studded list of supporters, including
Bono, of U2, and the artist
Damien Hirst, Bloomberg reports. In fact, "The (RED) Auction," expected to raise up to $40 million for HIV and AIDS treatment in Africa, was the two celebrities' idea. Hirst also donated $8 million in art, including his heart-shaped butterfly picture
All You Need is Love, which carries a high estimate of $1.5 million. More than 100 other artists, including
Georg Baselitz,
Cecily Brown,
Anish Kapoor, and
Richard Prince, donated works for the sale, slated for Valentine's Day, February 14, in New York. RED is an AIDS charity that has worked with various companies, including the Gap; proceeds from the Sotheby's sale will benefit the
United Nations Foundation's fund to support HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.
Sotheby's is previewing artworks from the auction today in London, and collectors can catch another sneak peek at Gagosian Gallery in New York starting February 4.
