When in Miami…

MIAMI—To get at the real insider experience of being at Art Basel Miami Beach, ARTINFO asked several art world figures—a museum director, a dealer, a collector, a consultant, a PR representative, and, in this case, a pair of artists—to tell us about the wheeling, dealing, wining, dining, schmoozing, courting, negotiation, resting, and—oh yeah—looking at art that they do in a day at the fair.

Berlin’s self-styled “hermaphrodite twins from the future” have enjoyed their “art is life and life is art” career since they were married in 1991. As their subject matter spans celebrity, self-promotion, and the commerce and community of art, art fairs are probably their most comfortable habitat. They’ve been here in Miami Beach since Monday night spreading a little flamingo-pink joy around them. But exactly how did they spend Wednesday? They shared their diary exclusively with ARTINFO.

6–9 a.m. “Daily performance ritual of shaving and makeup. This is a meditative time to concentrate on the day ahead.”

10 a.m. Meet their New York gallerist Claire Oliver for coffee to discuss the evening’s events and prepare for the premiere of the new video Kinderreigen at Scope this afternoon. “We present Claire with a beautiful watercolor portrait—not to open until Christmas!”

11 a.m. Second coffee, with Johnnie Walker, director of the artists-in-residency program in Tokyo. “It is decided that we will go to Tokyo in 2008 to participate. We will need to decide when we can go because we are very busy, but it will be intriguing to spend time in Tokyo and make a new video work there.”

12 noon–2 p.m. Performance at Art Basel Miami Beach. Meet with collector E. F. from Munich, “who is delighted with her big new painting of ours.” Interview magazine takes photos and interviews Eva and Adele discussing “futuring.”

2 p.m. Television interview with the Playboy Channel.

2:30 p.m. Meet their Paris dealers, Jérôme and Emmanuelle de Noirmont, and drink champagne to celebrate plans for their museum shows in Linz and Salzburg, opening March 2008.

3 p.m. Premiere new video Kinderreigen in Claire Oliver’s booth at Scope. Collector T.D. arrives and “is interested to having us make a performance for him in Las Vegas. We have never been there, so it is very interesting!”

4 p.m. Discuss travel to Santa Fe for the premiere of the PROJECT art fair to coincide with the opening of SITE Santa Fe’s biennial on June 26. “We will go!”

5 p.m. “Meet an American student who wants to write her master’s thesis about us. We already have eight students writing about us, from France, Germany, and the UK, but this is the first American so we will do it.”

6 p.m. Leave Scope to meet couture designer P.S. to discuss new dresses for upcoming events.

7 p.m. Dinner with Claire Oliver and her collectors V.B. and S.H. “We tell them funny stories about casting the children in Kinderreigen.”

8 p.m. Leave for the opening party at Art Positions.
