ROME—A newly discovered Caravaggio painting is going on public display for the first time, the Associated Press reports. Thought to be an earlier version of Caravaggio's 1594 work The Cardsharps, the work was believed to be by a follower of the Baroque master until British art historian Dennis Mahon saw it in a Sotheby's auction catalog in December 2006, suspected it was an original, and bought it at a London sale for $100,000. Further analysis including X-rays of the paint and other expert opinions confirmed Mahon's suspicions. The work will go on exhibit in the Sicilian city of Trapani at a Caravaggio exhibit starting December 15.
