MOSCOW—The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts reopens tonight with a refurbished display of its permanent collection, reports Bloomberg. In addition to reinstalling the permanent collection and improving lighting, the museum is displaying masterpieces that have long been in storage, including such works as Lucas Cranach the Elder's Calvary (1515) and The Madonna Attended by St. Anthony, St. Louis, and St. Francis of Assisi by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

The improvements are part of a larger project, approved in November, to celebrate the museum's centenary in 2012 with four new buildings. The Normon Foster–designed expansion will add 110,000 square meters (1.2 million square feet) to the now-40,000-square-foot museum, at a cost of at least $400 million, to be provided by public and private sources. The new spaces will house conservation facilities, storage, a library, rooms for concerts, and more exhibition space.

"The role of the museum in the world is changing," museum director Irina Antonova told Bloomberg. "The collection is growing, the number of personnel is growing, as is the number of visitors. The lack of space for exhibits and storage is an enormous problem."
