LOS ANGELES—This Saturday, the
Los Angeles Opera will premiere a third incarnation of its
Tristan and Isolde production designed by
David Hockney, reports the
Los Angeles Times. The first was created in 1987 and employed the
Los Angeles Philharmonic and director
Jonathan Miller, with whom Hockney admits having clashed; the second, mounted in 1997, featured the Los Angeles Opera's own orchestra in the pit and Hockney as co-director with
Stephen Pickover. For this revival, directed by
Thor Steingraber, Hockney returns to his role of designing sets, which have received an extensive refurbishment.
