Chelsea's Silver Lining

NEW YORK—At a time when fears of a big-time American recession are causing world financial markets to tailspin downward, the subject of buying (and selling) art has become equally volatile and challenging.

While cracks in the art market have yet to materialize in any kind of discernible pattern, you can bet your bottom dollar (or Euro) that some corrections are bound to be in order. With this in mind, I checked out what’s on offer in Chelsea on a recent afternoon with a new level of scrutiny, hoping, at the very least, that I could discover hints of a silver lining tucked away in a few solo and group exhibitions.
