LOS ANGELES—The Guerrilla Girls, a group that protests sexism and racism in the art world and culture at large with information campaigns and whimsical pranks, has sent an open letter to the philanthropist Eli Broad saying "an insignificant number of women and artists of color" are included in the inaugural exhibition at the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as in the collection of his private foundation, reports the New York Times. The Guerrilla Girls, who work anonymously, making public appearances only in costume, say that of the 30 artists in the exhibition, 97 percent are white and 87 percent male. In the Broad Foundation's collection, they say, 96 percent are white and 83 percent male. A spokesperson for Broad and the foundation told the Times, “Women are prominently featured in the opening installation at BCAM, which was curated by LACMA. In fact, 33 percent of the works in the exhibit are by women. One of the largest galleries at BCAM is devoted to Cindy Sherman, whose works the Broads have collected since 1981.’'
