The 34 carved and painted wooden figures, known as the Chapman Family Collection, were first exhibited at White Cube, which represents the brothers, in 2002, where Saatchi acquired them for a reported £1 million ($2 million). The Tate's buying price has not been disclosed.

Saatchi and the Tate began discussing the sale after the recent Chapman Brothers retrospective at Tate Liverpool, for which Saatchi loaned the work. The sculptures were also influential in the Chapmans' being shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2003.
